Lucius Howe
b: 11 JUL 1808
d: 19 MAY 1886
Biography
Lucius Howe came from Canaan Connecticut to Ohio in 1833. Little is known about his life. What is known comes from the May 13, 1886 and May 20th edition of the Cuyahoga Falls Reporter. In a newspaper article accounting an accident that occurred Lucius was walking down Front Street when the awning of H. Plum's shoe store was being arranged.

By some mismanagement the iron rod supporting the awning dropped. It struck Lucius heavily on the side of the head. He was knocked out and was carried into the shoe store where doctor's. Heath and Bill attended to him. He was conveyed home where he soon regained consciousness, but could not recall anything of the accident. A week after this accident having never fully recovered he died from pneumonia. Lucius had two sons Orville and Minor and a daughter who's name we know only as Mrs. Callahan.

Buried next to Lucius in the same cemetery lot is Ellen J. Callahan . This maybe his daughter however further investigation is needed. Also, buried in the same lot is Nellie Howe who died when she was 6 years of age. There are no family records which report a Nellie Howe dying at such a young age. The likely hood that she is related is very strong.

Brother Jim presented me with land maps of Cuyahoga Falls of 1891. It Shows the farm that Lucius Howe owned. One map is of Tallmadge Township the other of Cuyahoga Falls. In all the farm appears to have contained some 90 acres an exact accounting is not known. It is bordered on the North side by Howe Road and from the West side by Main St. (See Appendix B, Appendix C)

In the abstract will of Lucius Howe dated December 2, 1885 we have listed his sons Orville and Minor; daughter Ellen Callahan and her legal heirs. Executer of the will is Ellen Callahan. Witnessed by Thomas F. Walsh and Robert Adams. It mentions that the farm is located partly in Tallmadge and partly in Cuyahoga Falls.

Obtained a copy of the last will and testament of Lucius Howe. In it he gives the farm which contains 91 acres to his son Orville. To his daughter Ellen, he gives the property situated on the south side of Stow Street in the Village of Cuyahoga Falls. The rest of his property and possessions he divided among his daughter Ellen and his son Minor Howe. He appointed Ellen as executer of his will. The will is dated December 2, 1885.

Learned that Mary died from inflammation of the bowels. Also learned that Mary was born in Canaan, Connecticut.

Recieved an article from my friend Rick Harvey Acker, about Lucius Howe from the newspaper Beacon dated 2-4-1864. This article discusses Lucius Howe's appearant sympathy for the Southern cause. It describes an attack upon Lucius Howe by men who did not support his opinion.
